Head Injuries
Head injuries that result from contact or acceleration-deceleration injuries are divided into two categories: Open or closed head injuries. Most traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are the result of closed head injuries - that is, there is no open would to the
head.
Have you ever bumped your head and written it off as minor? “Mild” concussions from minor falls or collisions
on a bike, a snow hill, the rink, or a sports field, especially when left untreated, can affect cognition, concentration, behaviour, and emotional and social health for years.
In the event of a crash, a properly fit helmet could mean the difference between life and death. Helmets though have not been proven to prevent concussions.
The number one cause of concussion in sport in Canada is from hockey injuries! One study showed a majority (84%)
of the injuries occurring to children and youth 5 – 14 years of age.
